Nyanamo Community Conservation and Development organisation on Sunday 17 donated over 1,000 grevillea trees worth 10 million shillings to Kateriteri Army detach in a bid to promote conservation in the district.
Kateriteri Army barracks is one of the Uganda People's Defence Forces'
detachments in Kisoro district under the 35th infantry
battalion in Nyakabande.
The trees were delivered by the Nyanamo community conservation and
Development organisation's chair Duhimbaze Ramech and were received by the 35th
battalion second in command, Major Bosco Aguzo and Lieutenant Omita Kenan, UPDF
political commissar for Kisoro district.
Duhimbaze said that his organisation supports and helps the government in
creating a favourable eco system for everyone through restoration of green
cover.
He also cited the organisation's plans to champion a district wide tree
planting exercise in order to tackle landslide tendencies that escalate during
rainy seasons.
In his appreciation speech,the 35th battalion's political commissar,
Lieutenant Omita Kenan commended Nyanamo community conservation and development
organisation for championing conservation activities in the district and its
close partnership with the UPDF.
He noted that being a hilly district, Kisoro needs more conservationists
in order to save people's lives, property and other losses that result from
flooding, landslides and environmental degradation.
