The Gorilla
Organization has planted 10,500 trees on public land in Rugina, Nyarusiza
sub-county, as part of an initiative to mitigate landslide risks, stabilize the
area, and protect local communities.
The Gorilla
organization is a non-government organization that believes that for conservation
to be effective local communities needs to be uplifted.
This planting event,
involving members from the Gorilla Organization Kisoro, local leaders, and
community members surrounding Mount Muhabura, covered 10 acres in Gitenderi
Parish, Nyarusiza County.
Last year, the
organization successfully planted over 10,406 trees of various species on the
same land, with an impressive survival rate of 97%.
Dr. Samson Werikeh,
regional manager of the Gorilla Organization, expressed optimism, stating that
he expects Rugina to be fully green within five years, benefiting the
surrounding communities.
Nsabimana Erasmus,
the LCIII Chairperson of Nyarusiza sub-county, urged residents to actively care
for the planted trees, emphasizing their importance in controlling landslides.
Community members
expressed their gratitude to the Gorilla Organization for its efforts, noting
that the trees will provide numerous benefits to the community.
