The
Mukozi-Kasharara road users have decried delayed government intervention in
providing a permanent standard bridge that connects Nyundo and Kirundo at River
Ruhezanyenda in Kirwa village.
The outcry
comes at a time when residents from either sub counties of Nyundo and Kirundo
cannot easily cross from one side to another due to flooding in theb area.
River
Ruhezanyenda has been exploding during heavy rains at both bridges in Rubuguri
town council, Nyundo and Kirundo sub counties at Hamurindi trading centre,
Bizenga and Kirwa areas blocking traffic in all areas.
However,
many concerns remain in Kirwa following some improved bridge constructions in
the other areas.
In the last
two months, there has been a sequence of fluctuating water levels at
Mukozi-Kashara water point of River Ruhezamyenda. This has of late increased
steadily due to the routine heavy downpours leaving people stranded on either
side.
Speaking to
journalists on Saturday 6 May 2023, locals in the two sub counties said that
they can no longer cross their gardens, businesses have stalled, school going
children are affected, while tourism has also been distorted.
They noted
that a few strong hearted people that can afford to pay to be carried by a team
of strong men around can cross. They asked for the government's quick
intervention.
each person pays at least 3000 ugx to cross from one end to the other by being carried at the back. The
director of St. Johns Mutanda secondary, Katarihera Mark expressed his
disappointment to the district leadership that has failed to put a temporary
solution at the area so that children can access their schools.
By press
time, a team of concerned residents led by former Bukimbiri county MP
contestant, Asgariyo Turyagyenda was constructing a temporary bridge for people
on foot.
Asgariyo
noted that this will ease the current difficulties at the area as residents
wait for government response.
