The Kisoro Resident
district commissioner (RDC), Hajji Shafique Ssekandi has assured mudslide
victims in Murora and Chahafi town council of government's support amidst hard
times.
Heavy rains on Tuesday
night last week led to the death of eight people and several houses destroyed
while crops were also washed away by mudslides, exposing residents to famine
and disease risks in Murora Sub County and chahafi town council.
While delivering non food
relief items from United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) today,
Ssekandi commended UNCHR for positively responding to the district's polite
demand to support the affected persons.
He noted that the office of the prime minister has already procured food relief items and the minister for disaster preparedness will deliver them tomorrow. He added that Kisoro business community and several other organisations are mobilising more support.
Ssekandi cautioned residents against bad farming practices that lead to hazardous conditions. He noted that so far 111 houses have been completely destroyed, 173 houses are submerged with water while 800 people are homeless. He added that a total of over 2600 people in Murora and Chahafi are reported to be directly affected by the mudslides.
The Kisoro district LCV Chairman, Abel Bizimana asked beneficiaries to receive the little support they get and also ensure that everyone benefits because more will be provided.
Among the items delivered
from UNCHR today include 900 hoes, 900 shovels, 600 tarpaulins, 1,500
blankets, 1,500 sleeping mats, 1,500 pieces of assorted clothes while a
truck of posho from OPM has this evening arrived in Kisoro.
Bizimana applauded all parties that have played a role in emergency response to his people.
