President
Yoweri Museveni has directed the State House Comptroller to give 5million
shillings each to the families of those who died and 1million shillings each
for those who were injured during the recent mudslides in areas of Kigezi and
Ntoroko.
In the
condolences message that was shared on his twitter handle this evening,
President Museveni said he has directed the State House Comptroller to give 5million
shillings each to the families of those who died and 1million shillings each
for those who were injured as condolences.
In Morora sub county Kisoro district alone, eight people perished in the mudslides while others were injured following heavy rains on Tuesday night. The low lands in Chahafi town council especially chibumba are still flooded.
President
Museveni said the losses of life re-emphasize the need to observe the
environmental requirements strictly. He said that there should be no buildings
or gardens 50 metres from river banks, 200 metres from the Lake shore and that
there should be no building on hills with a gradient greater than 30 degrees.
“Forests hold the soil and
prevent the land slides. The roots of the trees hold the soil. The forests near
the river banks and Lake shores filter the water going into the rivers or
Lakes, so that they do not silt. It is therefore wrong to interfere with this
delicate work of God and nature” President Museveni said
in a statement.
