UNHCR funded structures at Bunagana primary school worth 178m commissioned

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) on Monday 8th June 2023 handed over structures worth 178 million shillings to Kisoro district local government at Bunagana primary school. They include a 3 classroom block, a 5 stance pit latrine and a 10,000 litre tank.

The commissioning and handover ceremony was graced by Kisoro RDC Hajji Shafiq Sekandi Sengoba as a guest of honor accompanied by other district political and technical leaders.

In his remarks, the Kisoro district UNHCR co-ordinator, Sharmake Hassan commended the cooperation and good leadership provided that enabled the contractors to complete on time.

He noted that the structures given to Bunagana primary school are not enough to thank the communities for their generosity given to asylum seekers that cross from DRC to Uganda every day.

The Kisoro district Education officer, Mwunvaneza Emmanuel commended UNCHR for the support given to Bunagana primary school.  He noted that the school has a total of 702 pupils but lacks enough structures despite the support given from UNHCR.

The principal assistant Chief administrative officer, Kwizera George asked parents, teachers and learners at Bunagana primary school to be patient because renovation of old and dilapidated structures at this school will be given a first priority to benefit from the DRDIP project once it kicks off in Kisoro.

The Kisoro district vice chairman, Nambajimana challenged the ruling government to also construct standard structures in public places like the past regimes.

The Kisoro district RDC, Hajji Shafiq Ssekandi noted that more benefits are to be realised in Bunagana including cash money, seeds for planting and water tanks as one way to thank Bunagana residents for accepting to lose their crops and property while hosting refugees.
