Woes to Kisoro-Bunagana road vendors as Municipal authorities intensifies operations

Street vendors in Kisoro Municipality have been warned against conducting their businesses along the Kisoro-Bunagana, Kisoro-Kabale road because they will be arrested and charged by courts of law.

The warning comes following the recently enacted markets act 2023, which when contravened one is liable to a fine of 480,000 shillings or six months jail time.

The Kisoro municipality town clerk, Haruna Kamba says he is ready to implement the law and advised road side vendors to observe the law or face consequences.

Kamba says Kisoro municipality is a growing town but faces criticism from tourists and other international road users that find people operating businesses everywhere in the town.

He added that despite a series of warnings, street vendors have persistently protested Kisoro Municipal council's decisions to have all vendors join the available markets, leading to loss of millions of money on flowers that are always planted and destroyed by these vendors.

Haruna Kamba says police-led operations have started to arrest and detain vendors that are still disobedient to municipal authorities. He added that over 12 people have been arrested and 3 of them will be charged in courts of law while 9 have been released.

Kisoro municipality street vendors' chairperson, Nizeyimana Silas whose fruits worth 250,000 shillings have been confiscated by municipal authorities while implementing the new law said that traders need a specific place where to work from.

According to the markets act 2023 as amended, Section 32 part (a), a person shall not sell goods other than at the designated work place, shop, pitch, stall or exhibit goods for sale on pathways or over any drainage channel within the market place.
