Kisoro hospital on spot over extortion allegations

Kisoro Hospital is on the spot over alleged extortion of money from delivering mothers through cesarean section(C- section) by medics to access services.

According to victims of extortion, patients are forced to make ‘under the table’ payments for would-be free services, including gloves.

Reporters started getting reports about the alleged extortion last year. The victims of extortion say mothers pay 100,000shillings to be operated, alongside paying for other things like gloves and polythene. They allege that the extortion is not done to those with normal delivery.

When our reporter visited Kisoro hospital premises this week, victims say they were asked 100,000shs to get facilities in the labour ward and others were asked to pay for gloves some were asked 20,000shs to be given medicine.

Victims revealed that because of acute labour pains they cannot fail to pay for what medics ask from them.

A woman ( name concealed) who was extorted told our reporter that medics in the labour ward and Theatre hide behind drug shortage to carry out their ill motives.

She wonders why they are forced to pay people earning good salaries. Such expenses have negative impacts as some mothers rush to borrow the money.

Another mother told this website that those who refuse to pay are referred to private clinics to ensure that they spend.

Benjamin Akakwasa Kisoro hospital administrator says they also got to know that there are bribes in the hospital but as the hospital administration, they do not know anyone who collects money from patients at the hospital. He called upon affected people to come forward report the perpetrators so that they can be brought to book

Innocent Ndagijimana Kisoro hospital chairperson management board says there are some people who give money to non staff or support staff at the hospital and end up blaming doctors. He says Kisoro hospital used to get 100 million shillings per quarter for service delivery but the money was reduced to 80 million which has caused the hospital start requesting parents to buy some materials to use.

The Kisoro district LC5 chairperson says all services in government facilities are for free and no one should be charged for any supply.
