Motorists and drivers in Kisoro district have been called upon to obey
zebra crossings and other road signs on the roads if they are to prevent
accidents.
This was said by Michael Kushaba the Kisoro OC traffic police during the
marking of Zebra crossing at Kisoro-Mutolere road near Read primary school in Kamonyi ward, Northern division, Kisoro Municipality by
UMUME-Kisoro branch.
Kushaba called upon riders both Vehicles, Bodabodas, bicycles to avoid
hooting when people are crossing on the zebra crossing but should instead stop
or reduce to allow pedestrians to cross safely.
In the past few days, two consecutive accidents occurred at Kisoro-Mutolere road near Read primary school and claimed the lives of three people. In last two weeks over 10 people have met accident on the humps near Read primary school. Police say most of accidents were caused by overspending and reckless driving.
Today Umeme painted Zebra crossing on the same road as a way of
safeguarding people's lives.
Aruho Dickson the Kisoro branch Umeme manager in Kisoro district says
Umeme is giving back to the community in this safety month and they thought
they can paint a Zebra crossing sign so that pedestrians especially
pupils can cross without interruption of vehicles.
Bazamanza Michael the LCIII Chairperson Northern division Kisoro
municipality called upon Uganda roads authority (UNRA) to look for possible
ways of widening Kisoro-Mutolere road because it is very narrow compared to
road users.
Muhwezi Kenneth head teacher Read primary school commended Umeme Company
- Kisoro branch for painting a Zebra crossing sign near school to save people's
lives.
However a
number of motorists in Kisoro do not understand basic road signs as many ride
and drive without observing and obeying traffic road signs put on roads.
For
instance, many riders and drivers do not reduce speed when they reach on humps
and other important road signs which has led to many accidents in kisoro.
A big
percentage of motorists and drivers who are using roads, did learn driving on
job or went to substandard driving schools and cannot interpret the road signs .
