A total of seven students from Kisoro district have
been admitted to different public universities for the year 2023/2024 academic
year under government sponsorship program.
Beneficiaries come from Muhabura shine secondary
school, Kisoro vision secondary school and Standard secondary school.
The government annually sponsors 4,000 students who
are admitted in all public universities in the country.
Among the universities that have released the Government sponsorship
lists are Makerere University, Mbarara University, Muni University among others
but Kabale University, Kyambogo University have not yet released lists of
students to benefit.
In Kisoro district three beneficiaries are from Muhabura shine SS, Kisoro
vision 03 and one student from Standard secondary school.
Kisoro vision students whose names have appeared on the Makerere
University government sponsorship list include Gift Amos who got 20 points and
Twizere Recheal got 17 points .Two beneficiaries who talked to our reporter
showed gratitude to the government of Uganda for an opportunity offered. They
attributed their success to a good learning environment. All the three students
were admitted at Makerere University.
Ampumuza Dan of Muhabura Shine who got 19 points has been admitted at
Mbarara University of science and technology. He commended Muhabura shine SS
that gave him bursary since his senior one. He says he managed to get 19 points
because he was focused and disciplined.
Nabbasa Martin the head teacher of Muhabura shine secondary school
requested students especially S.6 candidates to usually fill forms to get
government scholarships because no student can be given a scholarship unless he
or she fills Jab form.
Hafasha Steven deputy head teacher Kisoro vision said students performed
well because of hardworking and good discipline. He called upon parents not to
force their children to study science subjects because some students are not
good at sciences.
However Traditional schools, including St Mary’s SS Kitende, King’s
College Budo and Uganda Martyrs Namugongo, have topped Makerere University
government sponsorship list that was released on Friday.
According to the list, St Mary’s SS Kitende takes the lion share with
133 students. It is followed by Uganda Martyrs SS Namugongo (62), Kings College
Budo (52), Mengo SS (36), Gayaza High School (32) and Mary Hill High School
(31).
Other schools with more than 20 students admitted
to the ivory tower include Our Lady of Africa SS Namilyango, Seeta High School,
Iganga SS, Ntare SS, St Joseph SS Naggalama, Nabisunsa, Mandela SS Hoima, St
Andrea Kaahwa’s College, and Mt St Mary’s Namagunga.
According to the list, Makerere University has admitted 1,474 students
for the 2023/2024 academic year.
Of these, 778 are female and 696 are male.
