-National Water and Sewerage Corporation Kisoro is to extend Nkanka water supply to Nyakagezi cell, Northern Ward in Rukundo town council according to the area Manager, Ariho Peter.
Nyakagezi
cell suffers a great water challenge all year round despite being the source of
Nkanka waters that supply water in other parts of the district.
While
commissioning the Nkanka project in 2021, the president pledged that locals
would be provided with a public tap stand as an appreciation for supporting a
government project yet they are not first beneficiaries of it.
However,
no development about the matter had been realised in the area since then which
also forced the Kisoro Resident district commissioner, Hajji Shafiq Ssekandi to
write to National Water Kisoro in February this year asking the area manager to
fulfil the pledge.
Speaking
to voice of Muhabura today, Ariho Peter, the Manager of National Water and
Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) Kisoro area said that water pipes for supplying
water in this cell have been procured and work will commence next week.
He noted
that the process of this water connection will take three weeks. Ariho added
that the corporation will not be doing any other water extension in the
district because it has no capacity due to a huge debt of over 650 million
shillings.
Meanwhile
he says that water demand has highly increased during this dry spell leading to
low pressures in some parts.
He added
that to overcome low pressure challenges, the water booster at Bukara in
Bunagana town council has been added to a prepaid system of electricity
to enhance water supply in the Virunga areas of Nyarusiza, Muramba,
Chahi, Nyakinama sub counties and some parts of Kisoro Municipality.
Ariho
also revealed that water is pumped to all areas under national water everyday
unlike in the past where water would be pumped to different areas in a phased
manner.
He
appealed to water users to always sparingly open the water taps in order not to
interfere with water pressure for other users.
The LC1
Chairman of Nyakagezi cell, James Nwagayimana commended the government and
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for listening to peoples cries. He noted that
the locals will be saved from the burden of moving uphill in search of water.
